Then vs Now
While standing at a strangers front door during my initial cold-calling days, I hoped someone was home and they would be willing to consider becoming a customer.
I’ve come a long way since then. Social media and other online tools now provide resources, tools and processes to create unlimited methods for funneling perspective customers into a landing page.
While cold-calling in those Arkansas rural areas, I quickly learned that if I didn’t grab their attention within the first 90 seconds after they opened the door, I had no chance of making a sale and funneling them into my growing pool of customers .
What About Now?
We no longer have 90 seconds to make a sustainable connection. Researchers have discovered that users will typically give a webpage only 10-15 seconds of their attention before they click off to the next page, and in some cases even less. In other words, to have any genuine hope of holding users’ attention, a landing page must communicate some value within 10 seconds.
During the three decades that I’ve been involved in designing and polishing effective sales strategies I developed a process for identifying and presenting genuine value associated with any worthy product or service in less than 10 seconds.
What should I do?
I do this by developing an initial difficult-to-resist offer that serves as a “tripwire offer” or a “lead magnet” to draw people into an entry-point level of engagement with the business. The initial offering might be some deeply discounted or even no-cost item that’s above and beyond the normal product or service. It might consist of something like, a free eBook “3 simple steps to doubling your sales in the next 90 days.” A friend of mine offers uses an offer of “$300 for every referral.” That’s a powerful lead magnet, for sure!
